Backpacking Gear List for Reflection Canyon, Utah

Nestled within the remote wilderness of Escalante, Utah, lies the breathtaking beauty of Reflection Canyon. This iconic location offers stunning vistas and unparalleled serenity, drawing adventurers from far and wide. However, embarking on a hike to Reflection Canyon requires careful preparation and the right gear to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience. In this post, we'll explore the essential equipment you'll need to conquer this unforgettable trek. If you take just ONE thing away from this blog post and YouTube video it’s that you need to carry in all of your own water, there are not places to fill up and the water level is too low to pull from the reservoir. Carrying 4-6L of water will weigh anywhere from 10-13 additional pounds

Essential Backpacking Gear List:

  1. Backpack: A sturdy and comfortable backpack is essential for carrying all your gear on the trail. The Osprey Atmos 65L provides ample storage space and ergonomic design for long hikes.

  2. Shelter: The Nemo Dragonfly 1 Tent offers lightweight and reliable protection from the elements, ensuring a restful night's sleep under the stars.

  3. Sleeping System: Stay cozy and warm with the REI Stratos Sleeping Pad and Trailbreak Sleeping Bag, rated to 30 degrees Fahrenheit. Enhance comfort with a Silk Sleeping Bag Liner and Backpacking Pillow.

  4. Hydration: Water is crucial for staying hydrated on the trail. Carry a 4-6L Water Bladder, supplemented by Nalgene bottles, including one with electrolytes for keeping you hydrated. Here’s a peek at my full backpacking list and every piece of gear I brought into Reflection Canyon for our overnight backpacking trip…

5. Cooking Equipment: Fuel up with the Jet Boil Flash for quick and easy meal preparation, complemented by a Backpacking Spork for convenient eating on the go.
6. Navigation and Safety: Ensure your safety with a Spot GPS Unit for emergency communication and navigation. Stay visible in low light conditions with a Black Diamond Headlamp.
7. Clothing: Dress in lightweight, moisture-wicking layers like the Kuhl Sun Hoodie and Hiking Pants. Prepare for variable weather conditions with a Montbell Puffy Jacket and North Face Wind Breaker. Keep your feet comfortable with hiking socks and protect against sunburn with a Neck Buff.

Camera Gear and Tech List: Capture the stunning beauty of Reflection Canyon with the Sony A7R4 and versatile lenses like the Sony 16-35mm GM and 55mm F1.8 Zeiss. Stabilize your shots with the Peak Design CF Travel Tripod and easily access your camera with the Peak Design Capture Clip. Organize your gear with the Eagle Creek Pack-It Gear Cube and ensure you never miss a shot with extra Sony batteries and an iPhone equipped with a pre-downloaded AllTrails map.
(you 100% need the AllTrails map downloaded, at the end of the hike you will be using it nearly every 100 yards)

Optional Gear: Consider additional gear such as hiking poles, long underwear, camp shoes, and entertainment options like a hacky sack or deck of cards to enhance your camping experience.

Embarking on a hike to Reflection Canyon is a journey of a lifetime, offering unparalleled beauty and solitude amidst the stunning landscape of Escalante, Utah. By equipping yourself with the right gear and equipment, you can ensure a safe, comfortable, and unforgettable adventure into the heart of this remote wilderness. So pack your bags, lace up your boots, and get ready to experience the magic of Reflection Canyon like never before. Hope you enjoy your adventure out to Reflection Canyon, remember to pack everything OUT that you bring in with you, and always leave no trace behind to keep this place special for generations to come.
