I'm going to start to go back and google map some of my more iconic and favorite photography spots from our trip.  It's important for me to uncover these places I'd like other people to stop there and make some breath taking images as well.  There will also be some photography spots of which I will not uncover their location because I don't want anyone else to capture the greatness as some of these spots are secret even to me.  I'm also going to come at you with some tips about staying safe, camera settings and what to bring when shooting in these different locations.

First is a Google map pin of where I took this image (above) of the famous windmill in Haarlem - click the image to go to actual pin

Emily is always my second set of eyes when we're on the road - she sees photograph in a beautiful light and helps me uncover some of these sweet spots.  We stress the importance of the buddy system (yes the one you learned back in the 1st grade) if you go out shooting travel photography by yourself - remember to pull your face back from the camera and always check yourself and your surroundings.  Three things I'm constantly asking myself:
1. Am I in a safe place
2. Is anyone looking at me or my gear
3. Move your feet (to compose other shots and angles)

Second spot to take your camera in Haarlem would be inside the old Jopen brewery where there are massive copper brew tanks and some really nice stained glass. Click thru to view our images from Jopen Brewery here in that recent post

While your shooting near the windmill there's a great spot just across from the canal next to police station where we snapped the above image.  Forth spot would be this long exposure image (below) I took of the canals in Haarlem and their reflections bouncing off the water.  A busy spot so be aware for bikes, cars and walking traffic... This could also be a nice image of some bike lights and light trails going over the canals.  Google map pin for that spot is below the image... click on the map image to go to pin.

Three quick pointers on shooting in the Netherlands:
1. Conditions changed quickly here, have an umbrella handy and make sure your pack comes with a rain cover like my Think Tank bag
2. Go handheld - it's difficult to capture everything in the NL but remember that you can't always set up a tripod everywhere - Amsterdam is busy, bustling city so you really have to take advantage of the calmer moments you get and go handheld - leave the tripod behind unless your out to shoot long exposure stuff in the quieter city of Haarlem
3. Pack light - not all parts of the Netherlands always felt safe & welcoming so keep your gear load light and leave other valuables behind
