Exploring Local - MYT Camps near Piney Lake, Vail, Co
Camping near Piney Lake, Vail, Co & campfire time lapse
The last campsite that we picked to visit is a staple here amongst Vail locals and Eagle County outdoors men. Located across the highway from Vail Village this popular campsite and lake hosts some of the best views of the Gore range - Piney Lake Campground and Rec. area. Locate Red Sandstone Road (on google maps) - to begin driving into the Piney Lake recreation area. Directions from Vail can be found here on the Piney River Ranch site - check out their other tabs activities such as horse back riding, paddle boarding, jeep tours and more. Tons of camp sites litter the vast Red Sandstone Road that will take you deep into the wilderness areas - perfect for a camp trip with a group of friends. Make sure you pack everything in (and take your trash out with you!) these camp sites are very primitive - no bathrooms or bear lockers but you will find various stone fire pits built throughout the forests.
We spent one night camping about 11 miles deep off of Red Sandstone road also commonly known as Piney Lake Road (which isn't a paved road at all it's a logging dirt road) keep in mind any vehicles low to the ground may not make it back here. The roads become more rough with more rains - so be aware of rough conditions when driving in and out during storms. This campsite was perfect - with sweeping views of the Gore Range and waking up to the sun coming over the beautiful Rockies peeking into our tents. We had a fantastic time camping right in our backyard here in the Vail Valley - I highly recommend checking out the Piney Lake recreation area there's something for everyone up there. Round up a crew of campers and head up to Piney! What are you waiting for... (here's a cool time lapse I was able to create from the other nights trip)
